OVERVIEW

Academic written discourse has become a central topic of research in recent years, inasmuch as competent written academic communication is recognised as essential for success in the academic world. One of the main research concerns has been the analysis of interpersonal/ interpersonally-driven features in academic texts and the extent to which the use of these features is shaped by generic, disciplinary and cultural factors.

Interpersonality (in academic discourse) has been analysed from several perspectives, which have proved very fruitful not only to understand but also to problematise the writer-reader relationship and the role of relevant issues such as culture, discipline, individual style, (non)native use of the language, the role of English as a lingua franca, among others.

The influence of some of these factors on academic written discourse has been explored by the research team InterLAE, at the University of Zaragoza, which has led us to propose this international forum of discussion on these issues. The aim of this conference is to provide a multiperspective arena for both theoretical and experimental approaches which can contribute to and stimulate the current debate on the issues mentioned above. We are fortunate in having as key speakers at the conference the following:

Iberian Peninsula. From then on, all of Europe started walking towards Santiago, a holy city of Christendom.
This setting is alive with cultural expressions – annual music, cinema and theatre festivals, permanent and travelling exhibitions and traditional festivals- organised by the public and private sector, led by the five-hundred-year-old

University of

Santiago
, whose lecture rooms add thirty thousand students to Compostela population of one hundred thousand residents.

Past Narrative Inquiry Conferences

Published by Richard Fay under Narrative Inquiry

Past Narrative Inquiry conferences:

2008 Narrative Matters 2008

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Storying Our World
As humans we continually story our experiences. We construct our world through our personal, community, institutional and political narratives. The 2008 Narrative Matters conference theme aims to explore all of these narrative sites. Narrative continues to gain recognition as something people do, use and research. The Narrative Matters conference provides a meeting place for people interested in doing, using and researching narrative in diverse contexts and fields. The blurring and crossing of boundaries catalyzes discussion and inquiry at Narrative Matters conferences.

2008 Georgetown Round Table

Telling Stories: Building bridges among Language, Narrative, Identity, Interaction, Society and Culture

Narratives have been studied in many different disciplines: linguistics, literary theory, clinical psychology, cognitive and developmental psychology, folklore, anthropology, sociology and history.

The primary focus of GURT 2008 is the linguistic study of narrative, especially as it has developed within discourse analysis and sociolinguistics.

As our theme suggests, however, studying the language of narrative can take us far afield to other concerns: the construction of self and identity; the differences among spoken, written and computer-mediated discourse; the role that small and big (e.g. life) stories play in everyday social interactions; the contribution of narrative to social status, roles and meanings within institutional settings as varied as therapeutic and medical encounters, education, politics, media, marketing and public relations.

Thus, GURT 2008 will be a forum for building interconnections among language, narrative and social life.

A call for papers on MALL

There is a call for articles for a special issue of ReCALL on Mobile Assisted Language Learning
(MALL) edited by Lesley Shield, Agnes Kukulska-Hulme and June Thompson

    Submission deadline: 31 January 2008

Mobile phones, handheld computers and personal audio and video players are understood to have great potential in supporting new ways of teaching and learning. As ownership of these mobile devices increases and access to wireless networks develops, the use of such devices to support language learning becomes ever more feasible.
Until relatively recently, MALL activities very much mirrored early CALL activities. Electronic quizzes, grammar drills and vocabulary lists dominated. In the space of two or three years, however, MALL has become more disparate, expanding from a purely teacher-learner, text-based model to one that supports multimedia, collaborative listening and speaking activities and allows learners to co-construct knowledge to solve problems and fill information gaps.
In such a rapidly evolving environment, there is a need for research, both theoretical and applied, on how this new resource can be integrated into the language-learning environment.
This issue of ReCALL will include articles (between 5,000-7,000 words) which address aspects of the integration of MALL activities into language learning and teaching. Topics may include those listed below, but articles on other aspects of MALL and language learning, teaching and teacher education are also welcome.
    * Theoretical issues relating to the role of MALL in language learning
    * Empirical studies of the effectiveness of using MALL in language learning
    * Methodological issues in MALL and language learning
    * The role of mobile devices in supporting independent language learning
    * MALL in language teacher education
Articles should be submitted electronically to June Thompson, d.j.thompson@hull.ac.uk, by 31st January 2008, in accordance with the documentation at http://www.eurocall-languages.org/recall/contribnotes.html.
